How to add markup and see your margin

Mark up a line item over cost, and see what the job is worth to you before you send the quote.

The rate you enter on a line item is your cost, what the material or your time actually costs you. Markup is the percentage you add on top to arrive at what the customer is charged.

Add markup to a line

  1. Open a line item and select its expand arrow to reveal Markup %.
  2. Enter a percentage.

For example, a line with a Base rate of £100 and a Markup % of 20 charges £120, before VAT. The line's helper text spells this out as you type: "1 nr at £100.00 plus 20% markup is £120.00, before VAT."

Note

The base rate is always the pre-markup figure. A line item never asks for the charge directly, you set the cost and the markup, and the charge is derived.

See your margin

Below the line items, a Margin (internal only) strip shows:

  • Cost, what the priced lines cost you.
  • Revenue, what those lines charge, before VAT.
  • Profit, revenue minus cost.
  • Gross margin, profit as a percentage of revenue.

On mobile and tablet this sits collapsed under the totals, tap it to expand. This is never shown to the customer, it is only visible inside the quote editor.

Heads up

A line with no markup and no recorded cost is left out of the margin calculation entirely, since there's nothing to compare it against. If some lines are missing, the panel shows a note like "3 of 5 lines have markup" so you know the figure is partial, not the whole quote.

Frequently asked

Why is my margin panel missing?

It only appears once at least one line item has either a markup percentage set or a recorded cost. A quote with every line at 0% markup and no cost data has nothing to show.

Does the customer ever see the cost or margin?

No. The customer's copy of the quote only ever shows the charge, cost, markup and margin stay internal.

Can different lines have different markups?

Yes, markup is set per line item, so materials and labour can carry different percentages on the same quote.
