What your customer sees on an invoice

The email, the invoice page, how they pay, and the confirmation once they have, exactly as your customer sees it.

Once you send an invoice, your customer gets an email and a link to a page built for them, no account needed. Here's exactly what's on it, and what they use to pay you.

The email

The subject line is Invoice [number] from [your company name]. It opens with "Invoice from [your company name]" and shows the amount due, already netted for any deposit already invoiced or CIS deduction, the same figure as the invoice's bottom line. It states the due date if you set one, and the invoice is attached as a PDF. Your bank details appear directly in the email if you've added them in Settings, so a customer who never clicks through can still pay by transfer.

The button reads View invoice and pay online if you've connected a way to take card or bank payments, or View invoice if you haven't. Either way it links to the page below.

Note

Selecting Copy link or Share via WhatsApp from the invoice's Send menu skips the email and puts your customer on the same page directly.

The invoice page

At the top: your logo, company details, VAT and company registration numbers if set, the invoice number, and a status pill reading Awaiting payment, Overdue, or Paid. Below that, the issue date, due date, the quote it came from if any, and who it's billed to.

Then the priced work and totals:

  • Each section and line item, with quantity, unit and VAT shown under the description.
  • Subtotal (ex. VAT), then the VAT for each rate used.
  • Total inc. VAT. If a deposit was already invoiced separately, a Less deposit paid line appears under it and the bottom line becomes Balance due. If CIS applies, a CIS deduction line appears too and the bottom line becomes Amount due, see CIS deductions on an invoice.

How they pay

If you've added your bank details in Settings, a How to pay panel shows your bank name, sort code, account number and a payment reference, each with a tap-to-copy icon. If you've also connected a way to take card or Pay by Bank payments, a Pay online block sits above it with a Pay {amount} button for the exact amount due, described as "Secure payment via Stripe, by card or bank." Bank transfer keeps its place either way, it's never hidden in favour of the online option.

Heads up

Trame doesn't take a cut of what you're paid, but Stripe's own processing fee still applies when a customer pays by card or Pay by Bank. Bank transfer has no such fee.

Once it's paid

The payment options are replaced with a green confirmation reading Paid [amount], the date, and how (via card, via Pay by Bank, or via Direct Debit, with nothing stated for a bank transfer you marked as paid yourself). If paid online, it also confirms a receipt was emailed to them.

Frequently asked

Does my customer need an account to pay?

No. The invoice page and every payment method on it work with just the link, no login.

What if I haven't connected card or Pay by Bank payments?

They only see the bank transfer details, no Pay online block, as long as you've added bank details in Settings. Connecting Stripe later adds the block without ever removing the bank details.

Why does the total on the page differ from the amount they're asked to pay?

A deposit already invoiced, or a CIS deduction, reduces what's owed without changing the invoice's recorded total. The page shows both figures, the full total and the reduced amount actually due, so nothing is hidden.
